Music

Music was my first love, and it will be my last.
Music of the future, and music of the past.
To live without my music will be impossible to do.
In this world from now, my music holds me through.
- Macman, Owner of www.trance.nu

This page was invented to be somewhat of a recommendation for anyone who is interested in listening to some music I have found to be very enjoyable.

I listen to a wide variety of music, but the three central types of music that my taste is based around are trance, modern rock, and pop.  Other types of music I listen to less often include punk (Bad Religion, Face to Face, Pennywise, Lagwagon), rap/r&b (2pac, Notorious BIG), and industrial (Nine Inch Nails).  I currently have 2,907 albums.

Trance

The word trance is a difficult word these days because people automatically attach the word trance
to cheesiness or commercialism, but for me it’s when the music takes you to another world. For me
that is trance. It’s not so much a formulaic music, it’s more of a feeling, a euphoric state.
- Armin van Buuren, in "A State of Trance" interview 05-24-04

I began listening to trance/techno around fall of 2000. This is the newest type of music I have come to love, and I still consider myself to be an amateur in this hugely-expanding genre.  Out of the ~310 trance albums I currently own, my favorite so far is Armin van Buuren's 'Boundaries of Imagination - Disc 1'. Second favorite is DJ Mystik's 'Crystal Skies'.

Here are a list of trance albums I recommend not going without, including links to CDNOW artist profile:

Various Artists:

Armin van Buuren - 76; Boundaries of Imagination
My favorite trance album EVER.  This is the most unbelievably emotionally stimulating and elating trance compilation I have heard.  If I ever find another one as good as this, I don't know WHAT I'll do......

76, released in 2003, is Armin's first artist album and, without question, displays his talent to its fullest extent.  Burned With Desire, featuring vocals from Justine Suissa, is unbelievably good -- up there as one of my favorite trance songs.  Yet Another Day, featuring vocals from Ray Wilson (from Genesis -- yeah, the group Phil Collins was in), was a HUGE radio success overseas.

Photo of Armin in middle (above) -- he's just 23 years old.  Read a short interview with this amazing trance producer/artist on trance.nu.

Looking forward to Armin's second artist album sometime early 2005.

BT - Emotional Technology; Movement in Still Life
Movement in Still Life: Most notable track, Satellite, is one of my favorite songs ever!  Never Gonna Come Back Down is the catchy track that made the radio and put this amazing artist/producer into the homes and hearts of millions.  Smartbomb has some very smooth beats.

Emotional Technology is BT's 2003 follow-up to his hugely successful MISL.  Somnambulist is this albums biggest hit and catchiest song -- very well done, and a great introduction piece to BT's newer style.  Force of Gravity is my second fav song on the album -- kinda cool because it features unique vocals from ex-Nsync JC Chasez.

Darude
- Before The Storm
Sandstorm made Darude's unique style a common household commodity.  Feel The Beat and Calm Before The Storm are my favorite tracks off this all-out amazing album.

Paul Oakenfold - Bunkka
Starry Eyed Surprise is the radio station's favorite, and OK in my opinion.  I think this album has MUCH more to offer, though!  Southern Sun is flat-out amazing, and Ready Steady Go has wicked beats and flow...

Crystal Method
Crystal MethodIncludes one of my favorites, Jaded, as well as nine other amazing tracks.  Busy Child put this group on the charts, and Keep Hope Alive is an excellent example of how the rest of this album follows up on the hype.  I haven't heard a boring song yet with this group's name on it...

DJ Doboy - Trancequility Megamix Collections
See my separate page devoted entirely to DJ Doboy and his amazing collection of mixes.  And for what it's worth... I own EVERY album in existence by this incredible artist.  Doboy is also in charge of the Digitally Imported playlist.

ATB - No Silence; Two Worlds; Movin' Melodies
9PM (Till I Come) made ATB one of those most well known trance artists out there.  Obsession tops the list of my favorite songs by ATB and is near the top of my all-time fav's.

Two Worlds album includes some of my all-time fav's: The Summer, and Fields of Love (featuring York).  Let U Go is an extremely catchy and good tune, but I don't think it's as good as the version done by DJ Mystik on the album 'Crystal Skies'.

No Silence is ATB's 2004 return and is surely one of his best albums.  From start to finish, this album is ATB's talent unleashed -- every instrument is played by the man himself (and there's quite a variety of them).  It sounds quite a bit different than his previous huge albums (Movin' Melodies and Two Worlds), but somehow he has managed to incorporate the styles of those albums into the new sound found on No Silence.  Ecstacy is without a doubt the best tune on the album -- absolutely breathtaking.  Circular Symmetry is my second favorite -- sort of chill and catchy.

Chicane - Behind The Sun
No Ordinary Morning is a truly awesome track, bringing many emotions to the surface.  See my quotes page for some awesome lyrics from this track...  The song Saltwater brought this group much fame; it can be found on hundreds of trance compilations everywhere.

DJ Tiesto - Just Be; Nyana; In My Memory; In Search of Sunrise 2; any of the Magik discs
DJ Tiesto is without a doubt one of the best, and In My Memory is one of this artists best releases...and also his first artist album.  Close To You has the emotional power to bring tears, and In My Memory is just as good.  One of Tiesto's hottest songs, Suburban Train, is also featured on this disc.

Just Be is Tiesto's 2004 release -- his second artist album, following up In My Memory.  Songs like Sweet Misery and Walking On Clouds definitely follow through with Tiesto's amazing and unique style.  Love Comes Again is a masterful tune with vocals from newly-vocal BT.

In Search of Sunrise 2 is the second edition in the Search of Sunrise compilation series.  It seamlessly combines some of the best trance out there...  The Magik series also combines the best trance has to offer, with Tiesto's amazing talent behind it 100%.

Paul van Dyk - Out There and Back
This is the first full album I ever heard from the trance genre.  I can contribute my entire interest in trance music solely to this artist and this album!  How's that for a review?  For an Angel, Tell Me Why (The Riddle), We Are Alive... these tracks are just mesmerizing.

Trancemaster - any of these trance compilations
The Trancemaster series of trance compilations seems to be never-ending.  The highest number volume I have is Volume 29, and who knows how many more there are beyond this!  Volume 29 (both CD1 and CD2) is the best one I've heard.

The Ataris

So Long, Astoria
Released 03.04.03
Favorite tracks: In This Diary, entire album is good..
I really enjoyed this album, so I looked further into this group.  The band has actually been around for a while, and their music sounds very similar all the way back to the oldest album I was able to acquire (Anywhere But Here - 04.29.97).  Their songs all seem to have similar themes, as well -- most are reminiscent and seem to be about women.  Side note: I was a little disappointed with the Boys of Summer remake -- the original is just fine as it is, not to mention that DJ Sammy has just remade this song as well on the album "Heaven".

Evanescence

Fallen
Released 03.04.03
Favorite tracks: Bring Me To Life, My Immortal
Debut album from this group.  Tori Amos-esque soft piano melodies and female vocals, yet backed up later with thrashing guitars and Disturbed-like male vocals.  Definitely a new sound... check it out!

Linkin Park

    Meteora                          Reanimation                   Hybrid Theory
Released 03.25.03                         Released 07.30.02                        Released 10.24.00
Favorite tracks: Meteora- Numb, Breaking The Habit. Reanimation- none in particular. Hybrid Theory- In The End, entire album!
Once known as the band "Hybrid Theory", Linkin Park has evolved from their debut album by this name into their latest album "Meteora".  The first single from the album, Somewhere I Belong holds true to much of what made this band so popular.  A little piano, some DJ cutting, a lot of guitar, and a message that today's youth can strongly relate to.

Finch and Something Corporate

What It Is To Burn       Leaving Through The Window
Released 03.12.02                    Released 05.21.02
Favorite tracks: Finch- Letters To You, Three Simple Words, Waiting For You. Something Corporate- I Woke Up In A Car, You're Gone
Yes, that's right...  these two bands get stuck together on my list.  Why?  Because they both sound very similar, both had their hugely successful debut albums released at around the same time, and both have strikingly similar lyrics/themes.  And both delineate my emotional situation with women so well.  So check out both of these albums -- both are worth listening to in their entirety.
